What To Anticipate From Contemporary Natural Tanning Cream And Future Lotions

By Haywood Hunter

Exposure to the sun can result in skin cancer, particularly for those with pale skins. Those with more melanin in their skins have far more protection against this reaction. Previously, the only way to bronze the skin without the sun was with DHA. Today, a natural tanning cream can produce improved results by inducing the skin's melanin production.

It's important that the tanning products one uses are approved by the FDA. They should have proven themselves safe and effective through extensive testing. Random groups need to be used and the study should have been a double blind one to ensure objectivity of the results. Chemicals that are applied to healthy skin should not cause damage.

DHA isn't the only way to obtain a sunless tan anymore. Some new chemicals have been discovered which are often used together with DHA to make the results more organic looking and less streaky. There are also temporary bronzers which make the skin look darker until they are washed off with water and a cleansing product. There are pills available that contain colorants, but they are not FDA approved.

Bronzers cannot protect the dermis from the harmful effects of the sun unless they have a sun screening ingredient. Most sunless tanning products are worn for only a few hours, or are washed off after a night of sleep. They are thus not ideal as sun screens. Those wearing them should always ensure that their skins are protected through frequent application of a screening product.

The skin has two basic layers. The epidermis and dermis are also divided into their own layers. It is the surface layer of the epidermis that is affected by bronzers. Sunless tans now produce more organic and even results through fresh chemicals and different manufacturing techniques. The improved production results in better outcomes.

Sunless tans are able to produce a range of tones and depths. It is thus important to consider the type of skin one has when choosing a product. Usually those with olive skins need deeper tones whilst pale skins appear more natural when a lighter bronze is applied. Some lotions offer an instant tint that is intended to help make application more even. The temporary tint is washed away as soon as the semipermanent color has developed.

The most frequently used active ingredient in sunless tans is DHA. Its reaction occurs on the epidermis' outermost layer. This is a layer that is always renewing itself, so it is covered in dead skin cells. Exfoliation before application helps the product to act on the correct layer and prevents dry skin from absorbing more pigment than is desirable.

Accelerators are used to make the skin produce melanin when it is exposed to UV rays. Scientists are hoping to develop a product in the future that can provoke the skin into developing more melanin without exposure to UV rays. Such a natural tanning cream would bring a more organic, even result.
