By Haywood Hunter

Cosmetic eye shadow is a type of makeup product that is usually applied in the space between eyelids and eyebrows. Usually is is worn as a way to enhance the appearance of the eyes, and make them more attractive. There are several companies who manufacture and sell this product that is available in numerous shades and finishes.

The product is capable of adding depth and dimension to an eye. It may also be worn to draw attention to the eyes by complementing the eye color, making it pop. Most are made using mica or powder. Although some come in a liquid, mousse or pencil formula.

This makeup is used in civilizations around the world, the female population being the primary wearers. In most western civilizations, this product is considered a feminine cosmetic product, even when males wear it. Naturally, the space between eyelashes and brows is twice as large for women as it is for men.

Typically this makeup is worn to improve appearance. It works by mimicking the natural shadow that is created on the eyes. In theatre and plays, non-traditional shades and bright colors are applied to create a certain appearance or enhance the drama.

There are many different techniques used for application. These may change the way the makeup appears on the eye. Often, small brushes or even fingers are used to rub the makeup on. An important aspect in the process of application is blending. The color should be thoroughly blended into the skin to be effective. To remove the makeup, use baby oil, soap and water and some form of eye makeup remover.

This product is available in various stores. At a makeup store, technicians can offer helpful advice on how to select and wear the product. They may offer you special tricks and tips and suggest a specific shade that complements your skin type or tone. Some people wear numerous colors on their lid at one time to create a certain effect or add to their complete look. There is no set way of how to wear this kind of makeup.

Cosmetics, of all types, have existed for centuries. Eye shadow in particular has been around since at least 10,000 BC, when Egyptians would use the product in their burials. The use of scented oils and ointments for the skin, and paint and dyes for coloring was very popular in this country. They would stain their nails using henna, put rouge on their lips and cheeks and add thick layers of kohl on their eyes. This was practiced by both men and women. The Greeks and Romans also participated in the use of oils and paints. Although the Romans often used these items to repel evil spirits and eyes.

Sericite, preservatives, magnesium stearate, mica and colorants are common ingredients in eyes shadows. Fillers are usually made from talc, liquid binders from silicone, and dry binders from magnesium stearate. In order to create this product, there must be a perfect balance between the fillers and binders, both liquid and dry. When that formula has been reached, the shadow may be pressed and finished. Quality of cosmetic eye shadow depends upon its manufacturing source.
